Will King Edges Nathan Hughes to Win Kansas Amateur in Rain-Delayed Final at Firekeeper
Will King, an incoming senior at the University of Kansas from Olathe, captured the 2025 Kansas Amateur Championship with a 1-up victory over Nathan Hughes of Prairie Village in the 36-hole final at Firekeeper Golf Course in Mayetta. The win comes one year after King finished as runner-up in the same event.
King took control early in the morning round, going three up through nine holes and extending the lead to 4 up after 11. Hughes responded by winning holes 13 and 14 to cut the margin to 2. King maintained that lead through the end of the first 18, shooting 71 to Hughes' 73.
Hughes made a push early in the second round, winning holes 2 and 3 of the afternoon session to tie the match. The two remained all square through hole 27 before King won hole 28 to regain a 1-up advantage. Play was suspended on the 36th hole due to the weather, with King still leading. After the delay, both players made par, and King secured the victory.
King shot 71 in both rounds. Hughes carded 73 in the morning and 70 in the afternoon.
