U.S. Men’s Amateur Champion: Mason Howell

Mason Howell, a Georgia commit and rising senior at Brookwood High School in Thomasville, Georgia, won the 125th U.S. Amateur Championship at The Olympic Club with a 7 and 6 victory over Jackson Herrington. At 18 years old, Howell became the third youngest winner in championship history and the first high school player to claim the title since Matt Fitzpatrick in 2013.

Entering as the 63 seed, Howell delivered one of the most improbable title runs on record. Along the way he defeated stroke play medalist Preston Stout and Oklahoma State’s Eric Lee before closing out Herrington in Sunday’s 36 hole final.

Howell has enjoyed a breakout summer. He earned medalist honors at the U.S. Junior Amateur at Trinity Forest and qualified for the U.S. Open after carding back to back rounds of 63 in his Georgia qualifier. At Brookwood, his caddie and coach Jimmy Gillam serves as both his high school coach and assistant professional at Glen Arven Country Club, Howell’s home course.

By capturing the U.S. Amateur, Howell secured exemptions into the 2026 Masters and U.S. Open and an automatic position on the U.S. Walker Cup team when the competition begins next month at Cypress Point.
