Quarterfinal Preview: Eight Remain at the R&A Men's Amateur Championship
The field is down to eight at the R&A Men's Amateur Championship, with quarterfinal match play set for Friday morning at the Royal St. George's Golf Club in the Sandwich area of England. All four matches feature international talent and standout collegiate players who advanced with convincing victories in Thursday's Round of 16.
Quarterfinal Matchups:
Ethan Fang (USA – Oklahoma State) vs Callixte Alzas (France – University of California, Berkeley)
Fang advanced with a 5- 4 win over England’s Milan Reed. Alzas moved on after defeating Finland’s Sakke Siltala 4 and 3.
Matthis Lefevre (France – Stetson University) vs Veikka Viskari (Finland – University of Missouri)
Lefevre eliminated South Africa’s Daniel Bennett 4 and 3. Viskari advanced with a 3 and 2-victory over Japan’s Rintaro Nakano.
Billy Dowling (Australia) vs Riccardo Fantinelli (Italy – Princeton University)
Dowling booked his spot in the final eight with a 3 and 2 win against Filippo Ponzano. Fantinelli defeated Germany’s Tim Wiedemeyer 3 and 1.
Richard Teder (Estonia) vs Gavin Tiernan (Ireland – East Tennessee State University)
Teder secured a 3 and 2-win over Ben Gregg of the United States. Tiernan defeated France’s Gaspar Glaudas by the same margin.
