Gross Extends Lead at State Open of Virginia with Another 64 at Independence

Larkin Gross followed his opening-round 63 with a second-round 64 to take a commanding five-shot lead into Sunday at the 2025 State Open of Virginia. The Westwood Country Club professional is now 13 under through 36 holes at Independence Golf Club, pacing a field that includes several top amateurs and club professionals.

Gross carded seven birdies in Saturday’s round, including four on the back nine. He birdied holes 3, 6, 7, 10, 12, 14, and 15 to post 35 on the front and 29 on the back. Combined with his nine birdies and eagle on Friday, Gross has totaled 17 birdies and one eagle through two rounds.

Amateur Luca Rinaldi (Salisbury Country Club) sits second at 8 under after rounds of 67 and 65. Justin LaRue (The Foundry Golf Club) surged into solo third at 6 under with a second-round 63.

Ross Funderburke, Steve Serrao (a), and Robb Kinder (a) are tied for fourth at 5 under. Serrao plays out of Willow Oaks Country Club and Kinder represents Williamsburg Golf Club. Kinder, who opened with 64, shot 71 on Saturday.

Mark Lawrence Jr. and Connor Burgess are tied for seventh at 4 under. Hermitage Country Club amateur Sam Beach and Cameron Moore round out the top ten at 3 under.
