Walker Cup Day One Recap: U.S. Rallies in Singles to Lead GB&I at Cypress Point

The opening day of the 50th Walker Cup ended with the United States holding a narrow 6½–5½ lead over Great Britain and Ireland after a dramatic swing in momentum between the morning and afternoon sessions.

Saturday Foursomes

Great Britain and Ireland controlled the morning, winning all four matches:

  • Charlie Forster / Luke Poulter def. Stewart Hagestad / Ben James, 3&2

Saturday Singles

The United States answered in the afternoon, winning six of eight singles matches to edge ahead:

  • Tyler Weaver (GB&I) def. Jackson Koivun (USA), 4&3

  • Niall Shiels Donegan (GB&I) def. Jacob Modleski (USA), 1 up

  • Luke Poulter (GB&I) def. Mason Howell (USA), 3&2

  • Connor Graham (GB&I) def. Ben James (USA), 3&2

  • Gavin Tiernan (GB&I) def. Stewart Hagestad (USA), 7&5

  • Stuart Grehan (GB&I) halved Ethan Fang (USA)

  • Charlie Forster (GB&I) def. Preston Stout (USA), 6&5

Despite trailing after the morning session, the U.S. turned the match around in singles, taking a one-point advantage into Sunday’s decisive matches at Cypress Point.
