Jimmy Abdo Extends U.S. Amateur Underdog Run to Quarterfinals
Jimmy Abdo, ranked No. 4,292 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking, continued his surprising run at the 125th U.S. Amateur Championship at The Olympic Club by advancing to the Quarterfinals for Friday.
The Gustavus Adolphus College sophomore defeated Wolfgang Glawe of Germany and the University of Houston 4 and 3 in the Round of 32 before beating Daniel Svard of Sweden and Northwestern University 1 up in the Round of 16. On the final hole, his approach landed on the right side of the green and he converted the winning birdie putt.
Abdo reached match play after birdieing three of his last six holes in stroke play and advancing from a 20-for-17 playoff. He then edged Auburn incoming freshman Logan Reilly 1 up in the Round of 64.
A former Edina High School player, Abdo improved his scoring average from 77 to 70 between his sophomore and junior years, helping Edina win the state championship. At Gustavus, he earned Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year honors last season with one win and a 73.7 scoring average in nine stroke play starts.
This summer, he entered the transfer portal in search of a Division I opportunity and qualified for the U.S. Amateur through a 4-for-2 playoff. He later withdrew from the portal and has continued his season at Gustavus.
