Interview with Nathan Smith: Leading the USA into the 2025 Walker Cup
CGN sat down with Nathan Smith, one of amateur golf’s most decorated players and the captain of the 2025 U.S. Walker Cup Team, ahead of this year’s matches at Cypress Point.
Path to Captaincy
Smith, a four-time U.S. Mid-Amateur champion and longtime Walker Cup competitor, described making the U.S. team as the most incredible honor of his playing career. Now, he says serving as captain takes that honor “to a whole other level.”
Building the Team
Smith highlighted the depth of his roster, which includes standout players such as Jackson Koivun, Ben James, Michael La Sasso, Ethan Fang, Preston Stout, and U.S. Amateur champion Mason Howell. He praised their consistency and recent championship performances, noting that each had “individually earned it,” and the challenge now is to bring them together as a team.
Preparing for Cypress Point
The team will gather in California the week before the competition, with practice rounds scheduled at the Olympic Club, Pebble Beach, and Cypress Point. Smith emphasized the importance of striking a balance between preparation and rest, acknowledging that college golf and summer tournaments leave little downtime. “I’m a big believer in fresh legs,” he said.
Looking Ahead
Smith’s focus is on team chemistry, keeping players fresh, and embracing the honor of leading the United States on one of golf’s most iconic stages.
The 2025 Walker Cup will take place Sept. 6–7 at Cypress Point Club in Pebble Beach, California.
