Interview with Mackenzie Lee: North and South Amateur Champion Reflects on Her Breakthrough and Future at SMU
CGN caught up with SMU standout Mackenzie Lee following her memorable victory at the 2025 Women’s North and South Amateur. In our conversation, Lee reflected on her early start in the game, her consistency through college golf, and the breakthrough that finally pushed her into the winner’s circle.
Early Beginnings
Lee was introduced to golf at the age of two by her father and older brother. What started as a way to be around her family quickly developed into a passion that carried her through junior golf. By her teenage years, she had already built a strong resume, including multiple Arkansas State Junior Match Play titles and AJGA All American honors.
College Career and Consistency
Lee arrived at SMU and immediately became one of the program’s top players. As a freshman, she posted eight top ten finishes in twelve starts, recording numerous rounds under par. She admits, however, that despite the strong results, the lack of a win weighed on her. Second and third place finishes became a recurring theme, something she described as both stressful and motivating.
By her sophomore year, Lee had elevated her play with twelve rounds in the sixties and a career low 62. She remained ranked inside the top 35 nationally, though she still felt she was “knocking on the door” of a breakthrough. Her junior year continued the pattern of consistent excellence, with 25 of 35 rounds under par and top finishes at elite amateur events.
North and South Amateur Triumph
That long awaited breakthrough came at Pinehurst in the summer of 2025. Lee advanced through stroke play and match play, even managing challenges with caddies throughout the week. She credited her ability to regroup during pressure moments such as bouncing back from a costly mistake on Pinehurst No. 2 and handling multiple weather delays for keeping her in contention.
In the championship match, she nearly made a hole in one at the ninth hole, a shot she called a turning point in her momentum. Lee went on to close out the match on the seventeenth green, securing the most significant win of her career to date.
Support and Gratitude
Lee was quick to highlight the support of her family, coaches, and teammates. She spoke emotionally about her parents’ sacrifices, particularly her mother’s influence as a role model. She also thanked her teammates for their encouragement through years of near misses.
Off the course, Lee acknowledged her NIL opportunities with brands including Texas de Brazil, Veritex Bank, and Arcis Golf. She said these partnerships reflect the relationships built at SMU and the culture of support within the program.
Looking Ahead
With the North and South Amateur title under her belt, Lee feels the win has lifted a weight from her shoulders. She hopes it will open the door to more victories as she closes out her college career and prepares for the next level.
