Interview with Jieni Li: Northwestern Alum Reflects on Her Journey and Early Professional Career

CGN sat down with Northwestern alum Jieni Li to discuss her path from junior golf in China to competing professionally. Li reflected on her late entry into college golf, her growth at Northwestern, and the challenges of transitioning to the professional level.

Early Start and Junior Golf

Li’s introduction to golf began in China, where her father encouraged her to pursue the sport alongside her early passion for piano. Competitive junior golf soon became her focus, and with her parents’ support she developed the foundation that would carry her into college golf.

Northwestern Career

Recruited late in the process, Li found her fit at Northwestern through a connection with the coaching staff. She credits her time with the Wildcats for sharpening her competitive mindset and providing a strong team environment. Surrounded by talented teammates and experienced coaches, she built the consistency needed to compete at a high level.

Transition to Professional Golf

After graduation, Li turned professional and quickly experienced the difference between college golf and life on tour. She emphasized the importance of treating every shot with full commitment and adapting to the demands of competing without the support of a team structure.

Career Highlights and Goals

Li secured an early professional victory in Colorado, where her father served as caddy, giving her confidence to continue pursuing the next level. She is preparing for an Epson Tour exemption in Kansas City, with a focus on improving her long game and putting while maintaining consistency across her performance.
