Interview with Ethan Fang
CGN caught up with Oklahoma State standout Ethan Fang following his breakout summer, which included a win at the British Amateur, a runner-up finish at the Western Amateur, and a selection to the 2025 U.S. Walker Cup team.
In our conversation, Fang reflected on his journey from Plano, Texas, to Stillwater, Oklahoma, and shared insight on his mindset, his transfer from Cal, and the confidence gained from Oklahoma State’s 2024 NCAA team title.
Early Beginnings
Fang began playing golf around age nine after being introduced to the game by his dad at Stonebriar Country Club. He worked with coach Cameron McCormick during his junior years and decided in high school that college golf was the path he wanted to pursue.
Transferring to OSU
Originally committed to Cal, Fang made the move to Oklahoma State with one goal in mind: winning a national championship. He said the history and competitive culture at OSU made it the right fit.
British Amateur Win
Fang became the first American in 18 years to win the British Amateur. He called the links-style test in England a refreshing challenge and noted the differences from the courses he grew up playing in the United States.
Even-Keeled Approach
Fang’s calm demeanor stood out during his run to the Western Amateur final. He credited his ability to stay steady under pressure as something that has always been part of his personality.
Team Success and Momentum
Oklahoma State’s NCAA title run, which included five straight wins to close the season, boosted Fang’s confidence entering the summer. He emphasized the importance of momentum and team chemistry heading into the 2025 season.
Walker Cup and What’s Next
Fang will compete at the Walker Cup this fall at Cypress Point. He described the opportunity to represent Team USA as a dream he has had since junior golf. Despite his success, Fang plans to stay at Oklahoma State for all four years, citing the value of development and PGA Tour U benefits.
