Closing Statement: Ethan Fang Captures The Amateur at the 18th
Ethan Fang of Oklahoma State made history on Saturday by becoming the first Cowboy golfer since Bob Dickson in 1967 to win The Amateur Championship. Securing a one-hole victory over Gavin Tiernan of Ireland and East Tennessee State at Royal St George’s Golf Club in Sandwich, England.
Fang is also the first American to win the event since Drew Weaver in 2007. After a closely contested front nine, he gained momentum in the morning round by winning three consecutive holes on the back nine. Tiernan responded late with birdies on holes 16 and 17 to square the match heading to the 18th.
On the final hole, Fang struck a controlled approach to within five feet and calmly rolled in the birdie putt to clinch the title. His path to the final included a two-hole quarterfinal win over Callixte Alzas of France, a University of California, Berkeley commit, followed by a 5&4 semifinal victory over Veikka Viskari of Finland and the University of Missouri.
Currently ranked seventh in the World Amateur Golf Ranking, Fang earns exemptions into The 153rd Open at Royal Portrush, the 2026 Masters, the 2026 U.S. Open, and the 2025 Betfred British Masters.
