Jackson Buchanan Named 2025 Byron Nelson Award Recipient
Jackson Buchanan, a senior at the University of Illinois, has been honored with the 2025 Byron Nelson Award, presented by the Salesmanship Club of Dallas and the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA). This prestigious award recognizes a graduating senior who exemplifies excellence in collegiate golf, academics, and community service. Buchanan is the first Illini golfer to receive this award since its inception in 2002.
On the Course: A Stellar Collegiate Career
Buchanan's performance on the golf course has been nothing short of remarkable. Starting his collegiate journey with a 72.84 scoring average as a freshman, he has steadily improved to a 70.86 average over 36 rounds in his senior year. His dedication and skill have earned him ninth in the PGA TOUR University Ranking and 15th in the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR).
His senior year highlights include leading Illinois in five tournaments, securing a victory at the Fallen Oak Collegiate, and achieving a semifinal finish at the 2024 U.S. Amateur. Buchanan's consistent performance has also garnered him multiple accolades, including Co-Big Ten Golfer of the Year and PING All-American honors.
Academic Excellence
Beyond the greens, Buchanan has demonstrated a strong commitment to academics. He is set to graduate with a 3.63 GPA in Business: Operations Management. His academic achievements have earned him recognition as a College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District honoree, a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar, and a two-time GCAA All-America Scholar.
Commitment to Community Service
Buchanan's dedication extends into his community involvement. Throughout his time at Illinois, he has volunteered with the Eastern Illinois Foodbank, the Tinervin Family Foundation, and the North Gwinnett Co-Op, among others. His efforts have included packing and distributing food, mentoring youth, and participating in suicide awareness initiatives.
