Tournament Preview: 2025 Sunnehanna Amateur Set in Johnstown, PA
One of the premier events on the amateur golf calendar returns this week as the 2025 Sunnehanna Amateur tees off June 12–15 at Sunnehanna Country Club in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. The 72-hole stroke play event annually attracts one of the strongest amateur fields in the country and serves as a key proving ground for future professional stars.
Founded in 1954, the Sunnehanna Amateur was the first major amateur event to adopt a 72-hole format and remains a fixture among elite-level competitions. The tournament has crowned champions who went on to major professional success, including Rickie Fowler (2007, 2008), Collin Morikawa (2017), and Justin Thomas (2013).
The 2025 field once again includes top-ranked collegiate and amateur players from across the U.S. and abroad, many of whom are already on the radar for Walker Cup selection or PGA TOUR U status. The event kicks off with a practice round and opening ceremonies on June 11, followed by four rounds of competition Thursday through Sunday.
The format is traditional stroke play, with a cut after 54 holes. The final round will take place Sunday, June 15, with the champion determined by the lowest aggregate score.
