Interview Highlights with CGN
Path into golf
Smith started with plastic clubs at age three, playing daily with her brother and parents. Family time on the course drove early interest and led to Florida junior events, then national travel. After her father passed away when she was 12, she pursued their shared goal of using golf to reach top academics and high level competition.
Recruiting and Duke
Exposure at an AJGA event introduced her to college coaches. She followed up with targeted emails and Duke expressed early interest. She joined a lineup chosen by open qualifiers where the low five each week travel. Smith qualified consistently and played throughout her freshman season.
Mindset and preparation
She allows a short window to release frustration after a poor shot, then resets and commits fully to the next swing. If doubt or lack of clarity causes an error, she backs off and recommits before playing. She emphasizes selecting shots she feels most comfortable executing and avoids attaching identity to a single result. At the U.S. Women’s Open she observed detailed pre round and pre putt routines from professionals and applied those lessons to her own process.
Academics
Smith graduated from Duke in three years with a degree in Economics and a Markets and Management Certificate. She is pursuing a Master of Management Studies at the Fuqua School of Business. She prioritizes engaging professors and courses and keeps a structured schedule to balance travel, practice, and class work.
Family and support
Her mother and brother remain central to her journey. Her brother caddied at the Women’s Amateur and the U.S. Women’s Amateur, which she described as a full circle family moment.
Equipment
Scotty Cameron putter and Titleist clubs.
Team and individual outlook
Duke posted a runner up finish at the Tar Heel and a co champion result at the Windy City Intercollegiate. Smith targets additional team wins and a national championship push. Individually she aims to add wins by staying committed to preparation.
