CGN Feature:How College Golf Season Works

How Does the College Golf Season Work, and How Do Rankings Determine Postseason Play?

The college golf season doesn’t follow the traditional mold—and that’s part of what makes it so interesting. With both fall and spring segments, a blend of team and individual play, and rankings that shape the entire postseason, there’s more going on than meets the eye. Here's a quick breakdown.

A Two-Part Season

College golf is played across the fall and spring semesters. Fall events help teams build momentum and rankings, but spring is when things get serious. That’s when teams gear up for conference championships and the NCAA postseason.

How Rankings Work

Team rankings are driven mainly by Clippd Scoreboard  and Golfweek. These systems weigh factors like scoring average, strength of schedule, and head-to-head matchups. Every tournament result feeds into a team’s national profile.

Strong finishes in competitive fields give teams a real boost, while off weeks make it harder to earn an at-large spot in regionals—especially for teams that don’t win their conference title.

From Regionals to Nationals

At the NCAA Regionals, 81 Division I teams are split across six sites. The top five teams from each regional advance to the NCAA Championship, along with the lowest-scoring individual not on an advancing team.

Once at nationals, teams play four rounds of stroke play. The top eight advance to match play to decide the national champion.

Individual Players Matter, Too

Though it’s a team sport, individual performances are key. Players can qualify for regionals as individuals, and their consistency helps drive team rankings. Systems like Clippd Scoreboard also track individual standings based on scoring average and finishes.

Why It Matters

As Golfweek put it: “In college golf, every shot counts. Not just for the win today, but for the postseason berth tomorrow.” The entire season builds toward one goal—getting a shot at a national championship.

So when you see a leaderboard or a rankings shift, know there’s more at play than just trophies. It’s a season-long grind, and only the best teams and players get to keep chasing it in May.
