Amateur Qualifiers Ready for Oakmont at the 2025 U.S. Open

The 125th U.S. Open returns to Oakmont Country Club from June 12 to 15, 2025, bringing one of golf’s most prestigious championships back to a venue known for its punishing rough, lightning-fast greens, and championship pedigree. Among the 156-player field are 15 amateurs who earned their spots through national qualifiers or USGA exemptions. Representing a range of top collegiate programs and junior circuits, these players now face one of the toughest tests in golf.


Amateur Entrants and Qualification Paths

  • Mason Howell (United States) – Committed to the University of Georgia. Medalist at the Piedmont Driving Club qualifier with rounds of 63 and 63. At age 17, he is the youngest competitor in the field.

  • Matt Vogt (United States) – Butler University alum. Qualified at Wine Valley in Washington with rounds of 69 and 67..

  • Ben James (United States) – University of Virginia. Qualified at Canoe Brook in New Jersey with a five-under total. James is a former Walker Cup player.

  • Frankie Harris (United States) – University of South Carolina. Co-medalist at Emerald Dunes with an 11-under score.

  • Tyler Weaver (England) – Florida State University. Took one of five qualifying spots at Piedmont (11-under).

  • Michael La Sasso (United States) – University of Mississippi. Earned exemption as 2025 NCAA Division I Individual champion.

  • Jackson Koivun (United States) – Auburn University. Qualified at Piedmont with rounds of 69 and 64; currently among the highest-ranked amateurs.

  • Cameron Tankersley (United States) – University of Mississippi. Qualified from the Dallas site with a total of eight under

  • Lance Simpson (United States) – University of Tennessee. Secured entry at Bent Tree with rounds of 69 and 65.

  • Bryan Lee (United States) – University of Virginia. Won a playoff at Woodmont qualifier in Maryland.

  • Zachery Pollo (United States) – University of Arizona. Qualified at Valencia in California with a six-under total

  • Noah Kent (United States) – University of Florida (transferred from Iowa). Exempt as runner-up in the 2024 U.S. Amateur

  • Justin Hastings (Cayman Islands) – San Diego State University. Qualified by winning the Latin America Amateur Championship

  • Evan Beck (United States) – Wake Forest University alum. Exempt as champion of the 2024 U.S. Mid-Amateur

  • Trevor Gutschewski (United States) – Committed to Oklahoma State University. Exempt by winning the 2024 U.S. Junior Amateur
