Mason Howell Makes History as Youngest Player in 2025 U.S. Open Field

Mason Howell, a 17-year-old amateur from North Carolina, will be the youngest competitor at the 2025 U.S. Open, earning his spot through a commanding performance in final qualifying.

Competing at the Piedmont Driving Club in Georgia, Howell posted back-to-back rounds of 63 to finish at 18 under par and secure medalist honors. His 126 total was one of the lowest ever recorded in a U.S. Open final qualifier.

The rising high school senior has committed to the University of Georgia and has already emerged as one of the top junior players in the country. With a mature game well beyond his age, Howell’s path to Oakmont marks a significant milestone for junior golf in the United States.

Oakmont Country Club, one of the most demanding tests in championship golf, will host the 125th U.S. Open from June 12 to 15. Known for its penal rough, narrow fairways, and lightning-fast greens, Oakmont will be a major stage for Howell to continue his rapid ascent in the amateur golf world.

Howell joins a field of 15 amateurs competing in the national championship. His performance in qualifying, combined with his age and poise, has drawn national attention heading into the week.

CGN will continue tracking Mason Howell’s journey throughout the U.S. Open, with full coverage from Oakmont.
