Carson Bertagnole of North Carolina moved to the top of the leaderboard Tuesday during the opening round of the 124th Western Amateur at Beverly Country Club in Chicago, Illinois.
Bertagnole completed his opening round at 7 under 64 to take a one stroke lead. The championship is being contested July 27 through August 1, with the first two rounds consisting of stroke play before the field is cut to the low 44 players and ties.
Bertagnole Sets Opening Pace
Bertagnole opened with a 64 to establish the early lead.
Four players finished one stroke behind at 6 under 65. Auburn’s Josiah Gilbert, Florida’s Joshua Bai, Arkansas’ Thomas Curry and Charlotte’s Seb Cave shared second place.
Georgia’s John Daniel Culbreth, Wake Forest’s Nicholas Prieto and Vanderbilt’s Michael Riebe completed their rounds at 5 under 66.
Texas’ Daniel Bennett and Auburn’s Logan Reilly were also 5 under through 17 holes when play was suspended.

Round One Suspended
The opening round was suspended due to darkness with players still on the course. Those players will return Wednesday morning to complete their first rounds before the championship continues with Round Two.
Following 36 holes, the low 44 players and ties will advance to Thursday’s final 36 holes of stroke play. The field will then be reduced to 16 players for match play beginning Friday.
