Georgetown sophomore Drew Schauenberg enters the 2026- 2027 season looking to build on his first year of Division I golf and a strong summer performance at the Illinois Open.
The Barrington, Illinois, native competed in five events during his freshman season and recorded his best collegiate finish with a sixth place showing at the Georgetown Intercollegiate. Before arriving at Georgetown, Schauenberg developed an accomplished junior résumé highlighted by winning the 2024 Illinois Chick Evans Junior Amateur.
In an interview with CGN, Schauenberg discussed his path from Illinois junior golf to Georgetown, his approach to match play, the adjustments he made during his freshman season and his goals entering Year Two.

Building a Golf Career in Illinois
Schauenberg grew up playing several sports before focusing on golf as he entered high school. Baseball and basketball were part of his early athletic background, but he ultimately decided golf offered his best path forward.
That decision led to success in both Illinois and national junior competition.
Schauenberg won the 2024 Illinois Chick Evans Junior Amateur after advancing through stroke play and a playoff to reach the 32 player match play bracket. His opening match required 19 holes before he found momentum and produced several convincing victories during the remainder of the championship.
He also earned Illinois Class 3A All State recognition and finished his junior career ranked No. 2 in Illinois for the Class of 2025.
Learning From Match Play
Winning the Chick Evans Junior Amateur helped Schauenberg develop an approach he continues to carry into stroke play.
Schauenberg told CGN that match play allows him to play more freely because one mistake can cost a hole rather than significantly damaging an entire round. He has worked to bring some of that aggressive and confident mindset into stroke play competition.
His junior résumé also included several strong AJGA performances. Schauenberg finished fifth at the 2025 AJGA Future Legends Junior Championship after closing with a 69. He previously placed sixth at the 2023 AJGA Greenwood Junior Championship and seventh at the 2023 AJGA Stan Utley Junior Championship.
Choosing Georgetown
Schauenberg’s college search included outreach to programs across multiple NCAA divisions.
A visit to Georgetown ultimately separated the Hoyas from his other options. Schauenberg pointed to his connection with the team, the program’s culture and the opportunity to attend school in Washington, D.C., as important factors in his decision.
His freshman year presented a new challenge away from the course as well. Georgetown’s in person academic schedule required Schauenberg to balance five classes with workouts, practice and tournament responsibilities.
He identified time management and sleep as two important lessons from his first year of college athletics.
Adjusting His Game for College Golf
The transition from Midwest golf to tournaments in the East also required changes to Schauenberg’s game.
After growing up playing courses where he felt there was more room off the tee, Schauenberg encountered tighter layouts during his freshman season. That placed greater importance on accuracy and exposed driving as an area he wanted to improve.
He spent part of the summer working on his driver. While sacrificing some distance, Schauenberg said he began hitting the ball straighter and putting himself in better positions to score.

Testing His Progress at the Illinois Open
Schauenberg put those adjustments to the test during the 2026 Illinois Open.
The event provided another opportunity to compete against professionals and leading amateurs from his home state. It was also his second appearance in the championship after competing the previous year.
Schauenberg told CGN that his freshman season reinforced the importance of finding fairways. He carried that lesson into the Illinois Open and emphasized positioning himself to attack favorable pins and par fives rather than repeatedly playing from the rough.
The experience also showed him another difference between junior and higher level tournament golf. College and amateur events can feature more demanding hole locations, increasing the importance of course management and knowing when the middle of the green is the correct target.
Goals for Sophomore Season
Schauenberg enters his second season at Georgetown with increased confidence in his game and clear objectives.
With several starters returning, he believes the Hoyas have an opportunity for a strong season. Individually, Schauenberg wants to compete in every event, record more rounds under par and put himself in position to contend for a collegiate victory.
Those goals follow a freshman season that gave him his first extended experience balancing Division I golf, Georgetown’s academic demands and tournament competition away from the Midwest.
