A Breakthrough Senior Season

John’s final season was the culmination of years of growth and perseverance.

Along with winning the Big South Championship, he recorded a T5 finish at the Fripp Island Intercollegiate, posted rounds of 70, 72, and 71 at the Elon Phoenix Invitational, and fired multiple rounds in the 60s throughout the year.

The victory at Fripp Island secured his spot in the NCAA Bermuda Run Regional, giving him an opportunity to compete against some of the top players in college golf.

From Football to Golf

Before becoming one of the Big South’s top players, golf was not John’s primary sport.

Growing up in England, he spent much of his childhood playing football before discovering golf through time spent at the course with his father.

After practices, he would head to the golf club, chip around the greens, and spend time with family. What began as a casual hobby quickly became something more.

A national tournament at age 16 proved to be a turning point. After contending near the top of the leaderboard, John realized he could compete at a high level and began pursuing golf more seriously.

The Road to Charleston Southern

John’s path to college golf was not straightforward.

He had considered several opportunities and was unsure whether he would ultimately come to the United States. Following a strong summer representing Wales and competing internationally, Charleston Southern entered the picture.

The program’s culture stood out immediately.

According to John, the close relationships within the team and the opportunity to compete in American college golf made Charleston Southern the right fit.

Overcoming Injury

One of the defining moments of John’s college career came away from competition.

During his sophomore season, he suffered a hand injury after striking a hidden tree root during tournament play. The injury required surgery and sidelined him for an extended period.

The recovery process was challenging physically and mentally. Unable to compete regularly, John focused on supporting teammates, staying engaged with the program, and finding ways to contribute even while injured.

Rather than viewing the setback as a career obstacle, he used the experience to reshape his outlook on the game.

The time away helped him develop greater appreciation for college golf, improve his short game, and rethink how he handled preparation and pressure.

Playing His Own Style

One of the biggest lessons John learned during his collegiate career was the importance of trusting his strengths.

Growing up in the United Kingdom, he developed a lower ball flight designed to handle windy conditions and links style golf.

When he first arrived in the United States, he believed he needed to change his game to match the high ball flights often seen in college golf. Eventually, he realized the style that helped him represent Wales and earn a college opportunity was already good enough.

That confidence became a major factor in his success.

By leaning into his strengths while making small adjustments where necessary, John found a formula that consistently produced results.

The time away from competition allowed him to evaluate how he practiced, competed, and managed expectations. That process helped create the foundation for his breakthrough senior campaign.
