Auburn and UCLA advanced to the championship match at the NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship following semifinal victories Tuesday at Omni La Costa Resort in Carlsbad, California.
Top seeded Auburn defeated defending national champion Oklahoma State to move into the program’s second championship match in the last three seasons. UCLA secured its spot in the final after defeating Arizona, marking the Bruins’ second upset victory of the day after earlier eliminating Texas in the quarterfinals.
Auburn earned points from Logan Reilly, Josiah Gilbert, and Cayden Pope during the semifinal win over Oklahoma State. Reilly defeated Eric Lee 7 and 5 in the opening match, while Gilbert added a 4 and 3 victory over Ethan Fang.
Pope clinched the deciding point with a 3 and 2 win against Filip Fahlberg Johnsson. Auburn’s remaining matches featuring Jackson Koivun against Preston Stout and Jake Albert against Gaven Lane were still active when the Tigers secured the team victory.
UCLA defeated Arizona 3 to 1 behind victories from Josh Kim, Tyler Loree, and Alex Papayoanou. Papayoanou secured the clinching point with a 2 and 1 win over William Wistrand.
Arizona’s lone victory came from Filip Jakubcik, who defeated Kyle An 3 and 2. Baylor Larrabee and Zach Pollo were tied through 17 holes when the match ended following UCLA’s clinching point.
