Old Dominion men’s golf head coach Murray Rudisill will retire at the conclusion of the 2026 season, ending a 51 year tenure with the program.
Rudisill became head coach in 1975 after joining the university as a professor in 1972. A former player at NC State, he later earned a master’s degree from North Carolina and a doctorate from Florida before taking over the Monarchs program.
Over five decades, Rudisill led Old Dominion to two conference championships in 2003 and 2007, along with NCAA Regional appearances in both seasons. The Monarchs also captured state titles in 1983, 1984, 1986, 1992, and 1993 during his tenure.
Rudisill earned seven conference coach of the year honors and coached seven individual conference champions. Alan Schulte secured back to back titles in 1984 and 1985, while 18 players finished inside the top three at conference championships under his leadership.
He also guided Geoff Harris to conference rookie of the year honors before Harris went on to win two conference player of the year awards. Eric Onesi added another rookie of the year honor in 2007.
Six former players from the program have been inducted into the Old Dominion Sports Hall of Fame, and multiple players advanced to professional golf, including PGA Tour competitors.
Rudisill retires as the longest tenured head coach in Old Dominion athletics history and the longest tenured Division I head coach in the country.
