Interview Highlights with CGN

Early Development in the Philippines

Malixi began playing golf at age eight after becoming curious about her father’s clubs at home. She quickly transitioned from casual practice sessions to local tournaments in the Philippines, developing an early comfort level with competitive golf. She credited her father as her primary mentor, explaining that she learned the rules through consistent tournament experience and repetition rather than formal instruction.

Growing Through Constant Competition

Malixi described spending long hours practicing as a junior, including stretches where she would hit balls for most of the day. She said her love for training and repetition became a foundation for her improvement. As she continued developing, she played in junior circuits such as IMG and FCG and gained early experience traveling and competing in higher level events.

COVID Training Advantage and U.S. Exposure

During the COVID lockdown period, Malixi said she was fortunate to still have access to golf courses in the Philippines. That allowed her to practice daily while many players worldwide faced restrictions. In 2021, her parents sent her to the United States for several months, where she played AJGA events and began connecting with college programs during the recruiting process.

Gratitude Toward Family and Coaches

Malixi emphasized the sacrifices made by her parents, crediting them for supporting her golf journey from a young age. She also highlighted her sister for providing emotional support and prayers while her parents focused heavily on her tournament schedule. Malixi also expressed appreciation for both her coaches in the Philippines and the Duke coaching staff for their consistent guidance.

Choosing Duke University

Malixi explained that she considered turning professional before ultimately deciding to pursue college golf. She visited several major programs and said Duke stood out because of the campus environment, the coaching staff, and the team culture. She noted that head coach Dan Brooks and assistant coach Lu Wayos created an atmosphere that pushed players to improve while still offering strong support.

Learning Independence Through College Golf

One of Malixi’s biggest reasons for choosing college golf was gaining independence. She shared that she had been homeschooled since middle school and relied heavily on her parents for daily responsibilities. Adjusting to college life required her to manage her own schedule, laundry, and academic responsibilities, which she described as one of her biggest early challenges. She said the transition has become easier and is now helping her prepare for the professional stage.

Experience Playing Professional Events

Malixi said she has been competing in professional tournaments since age fourteen, including events in Asia. She described professional golf as a more isolated environment compared to amateur golf and pointed out that the pace of play is significantly slower because players are competing for money. Still, she believes the early exposure helped her develop comfort under pressure.

Responding to Bad Breaks and Staying Composed

Malixi explained that she approaches adversity by accepting that bad breaks are part of golf. She believes the difference between good players and great players often comes down to response. She emphasized that maintaining composure and continuing forward is critical, since uncontrollable outcomes are inevitable in tournament play.

Managing Pressure and Expectations

Malixi acknowledged that external expectations can create pressure, especially after reaching the top levels of amateur golf. She said that her past accomplishments motivate her to improve, but also create added weight when she competes. She emphasized confidence in knowing she has already proven she can perform at the highest level, and believes success will continue as she stays patient.

Back Injury and Recovery

Malixi revealed that she struggled significantly in early 2025 due to a back injury. She explained that the injury came from overexertion, including hitting roughly 400 balls per day on mats while preparing for major events. During a tournament in Vietnam, she felt a sharp pop in her back and withdrew immediately. Medical evaluation led to her taking several weeks away from golf.

She described the injury as a lesson in balancing preparation with health and noted that her swing had become too shallow at the time, adding strain to her back. She believes the experience taught her how to listen to her body and manage workload more carefully.

Spring Goals and Upcoming Events

Malixi said her spring schedule includes the Asia Pacific Amateur Championship and the Augusta National Women’s Amateur, along with Duke’s collegiate slate. She emphasized the importance of focusing on herself first in order to contribute fully to her team. She also expressed confidence in Duke’s team direction, citing the work ethic and motivation she sees across the roster.
