Interview Highlights with CGN

Early start and late rise

Hong began golf at age twelve during the COVID shutdown after earlier years in tennis and baseball. He credits athletic instincts and a high work rate for his fast progression.

Transition to the University of Texas at San Antonio

Moving from Mexico to the University of Texas at San Antonio brought new academic demands, travel, and a shift from Spanish and Korean to English. He called the adjustment difficult but a challenge he welcomed.

Team environment and support

Hong started the year alongside another Mexican freshman. With three freshmen in total and supportive upperclassmen, he described the team chemistry as a major help during early transitions.

Balancing academics and competition

With a near perfect GPA, Hong maintains structure around assignments and travel, staying ahead of class work to manage the college schedule.

Handling pressure and adversity

Hong approaches golf with the understanding that results will not always match execution. When he makes the right decision and gets a bad break, he moves forward and repeats the same routine.

Areas of focus

In the offseason he practices based on his statistical needs, working across all areas of his game while tightening specific details identified through his numbers.

International versus college golf

Hong sees little difference in the competitive demands. The main distinction is representing a university rather than a country.

Equipment

Hong plays a full Titleist setup through a Titleist sponsorship.

Goals

The University of Texas at San Antonio aims to climb the national rankings. Individually, Hong’s goal is to move into the top two hundred fifty players in college golf by the end of his freshman season.

Professional aspirations

Hong has already shared with his coaches and family that his long term plan is to turn professional after college.
