Interview Highlights with CGN

Early path and introduction to the game

Box grew up in Leicester playing football at a high level before discovering golf around age thirteen. A casual trip to the range with his father sparked a shift toward the sport. He began at Beedles Lake, moved to Kirby Muxloe under his swing coach and later joined Roughly Park to prepare for more demanding tournaments.

Decision to compete in the United States

Box considered turning professional early but valued the opportunity to study and compete in America. Hutchinson head coach Chris Young recruited him to a program that had won consecutive national titles, making the move an easy decision. He arrived knowing only one teammate, but the competitive structure and daily demands accelerated his development.

Transition from junior golf to college golf

Adjusting to the United States required a mindset shift. Box went from being a dominant junior at home to competing against deeper fields. He emphasized discipline with early classes, structured practice and qualifying, and embracing the competitive environment. He credits this period with reshaping the way he trains and prepares.

Rise to Division I and choosing Eastern Michigan

After two accomplished seasons at Hutchinson, Box and Coach Young agreed he was ready for the next level. On his visit to Eastern Michigan, he connected immediately with head coach Andy Walker and assistant Ryan Yip. Their professional playing backgrounds and clear development plan convinced him the program was the right fit.

Technical focus and scoring improvements

This season Box has targeted wedge scoring inside one hundred yards. He and Yip built a clock system to standardize length, tempo and trajectory across his scoring clubs. Gripping down to specific markers on the grip and matching each position to a predictable yardage has improved his control from fifty to eighty yards. The goal is to turn more of those shots into makeable birdie opportunities or reliable saves.

Mindset and composure

Box described past tendencies to react emotionally in competition, a habit shaped partly by his football background. Work with a sports psychologist has shifted his focus to acceptance, recovery and process based thinking. He aims to stay patient, trust his preparation and remain composed after mistakes.

Physical work and daily habits

He maintains mobility with regular stretching, particularly after travel days. Off the course he prioritizes staying connected with teammates and family to maintain balance.

Goals for the upcoming semester

Box wants to remain in contention consistently, continue building top ten finishes and position Eastern Michigan for a stronger spring. He aims to break program scoring benchmarks and guide the team toward new standards.

Looking ahead

His long term plan is to remain in the United States after graduation and pursue professional golf. Eastern Michigan has already provided support and structure for that transition, and Box intends to follow the path toward the PGA Tour.
