Stanford’s Jay Leng added one of amateur golf’s most prestigious titles to his resume Sunday, defeating Vanderbilt’s Michael Riebe, 5 and 4, to win the 124th Western Amateur at The Beverly Country Club in Chicago.
Leng earned his place in the championship match with a 3 and 1 semifinal victory over stroke play medalist Miles Russell. Riebe advanced after edging Auburn’s Logan Reilly, 1 up.
The title made Leng the fifth Stanford golfer to win the Western Amateur, joining Tiger Woods, Joel Kribel, David Chung, and Michael Thorbjornsen.
The championship began with 72 holes of stroke play before the top 16 competitors advanced to match play. Inclement weather postponed the semifinal and championship matches, with both rounds concluding on Sunday.
