Texas closed with patience and precision to claim the National Invitational title, edging host Arizona by one stroke at Omni Tucson National Resort in Tucson, Arizona.
The Longhorns finished the three day event at forty one under par, pulling ahead late after Arizona briefly held a one shot lead entering the final hole. Arizona senior William Wistrand made bogey on the closing hole, opening the door for Texas. Senior Tommy Morrison capitalized moments later, hitting his third shot on the par five second hole to inside two feet and converting the birdie that secured the victory.
Texas posted a final round ten under par, counting scores from Daniel Bennett, Luke Potter, Morrison, and Matt Comegys. Bennett led the team on the final day with a six under par sixty six. Potter and Morrison each added two under par rounds of seventy.
The win marked Texas’ second team title of the season, following a shared victory at the Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational. The Longhorns earned the title without senior Christiaan Maas, who was competing overseas at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic.
Arizona finished second at forty under par, marking its second consecutive runner up finish at the event. Iowa State placed third at twenty nine under par, while St Mary’s and Brigham Young tied for fourth at twenty under par.
In the individual race, Arizona senior Filip Jakubcik captured medalist honors at fourteen under par with rounds of sixty seven, sixty eight, and sixty seven. Texas senior Luke Potter finished second at twelve under par, continuing a strong week for the Longhorns.
Texas placed five players inside the top twenty, a key factor in the narrow team win. Potter finished second, Morrison placed fourth, Bennett tied for eighth, Eduardo Derbez Torres finished tied for fourteenth while competing as an individual, and Comegys tied for eighteenth.
