Interview Highlights with CGN

Early Development in China

Wang began playing golf at a young age with his father, who introduced him to the game and later stepped away to avoid passing along bad habits. Structured junior tournaments and a consistent swing coach helped shape Wang’s early development and established disciplined practice habits.

Decision to Play College Golf in the United States

At age eighteen, Wang recognized the competitive gap between domestic events in China and the level required to pursue a professional future. Watching older Chinese players succeed in American college golf influenced his decision to follow the same path. He cited stronger competition, coaching, and facilities as key factors.

Choosing the University of Memphis

Wang’s initial interest in Memphis came from his passion for music and the city’s cultural history. His decision was reinforced by the program’s facilities and trust in the coaching staff. He believed Memphis offered the environment needed to elevate his game.

Adapting as a Freshman

Wang described his freshman season as challenging due to language barriers and adjusting to academic and athletic demands. Staying organized and committed helped him navigate early difficulties while gaining valuable experience.

Breakthrough Sophomore Summer

Wang remained in Memphis throughout the summer, preparing for US Junior Amateur and US Amateur qualifying. He followed a structured daily plan that included fitness, ball striking, and focused short game work. That preparation allowed him to enter the season in competitive form.

Purpose Driven Practice

Wang emphasized the shift from unstructured practice to intentional daily planning. Each session targeted specific areas of improvement, including fitness, ball striking, and short game, rather than relying solely on strengths.

Refining the Short Game

Recognizing his strength as a ball striker, Wang adjusted his training to address weaknesses around the green. Balancing all aspects of his game has become a central focus as he continues to progress.

Mental Approach and Course Management

Wang maintains a calm mindset when facing adversity. He views bad breaks as part of golf and emphasizes positivity, patience, and commitment to the next shot. He believes consistency begins with finding fairways and staying composed.

First Collegiate Victory at Steelwood

Wang captured his first collegiate win at the Steelwood Collegiate in weather shortened conditions. Despite making a costly triple bogey on a familiar hole, he credited improved maturity and coaching support for helping him recover and remain in contention.

Goals Moving Forward

Wang focuses on executing each shot to the best of his ability rather than chasing results. Team goals include qualifying for regionals and advancing further into postseason play as Memphis builds momentum.
