North Florida senior Adam Vermut secured the 20th St. Augustine Amateur with a five-foot birdie on the par-5 eighteenth hole at St. Johns Golf Club on December 7, finishing one shot ahead of Southern Miss freshman Jake Moffitt.
Vermut entered the final round with a three-shot lead and posted 71 for a seven-under total of 206. The round was played under challenging conditions due to the weather, with an early shotgun start and a ninety-minute delay to clear standing water.
Moffitt briefly moved ahead with birdies at the eleventh and twelfth, while Vermut made double bogey on the twelfth after hitting his tee shot out of bounds. Vermut answered with a seven-foot birdie on the fourteenth while Moffitt made bogey. Moffitt then tied the lead with a birdie at the sixteenth but three-putted the seventeenth, opening the door for Vermut’s decisive finish. Vermut reached the eighteenth green with a six iron from two hundred twenty-five yards and two-putted from twenty-five feet for the winning birdie.
Seventeen-year-old Max VanderMolen of Richland, Michigan, who is committed to Louisville, carded the round of the day with 64 and finished third at five under. Ponte Vedra Beach High senior Easton Oliva, who has signed with North Florida, and Chattanooga sophomore Ward Harris tied for fourth at three under after rounds of 72 and 69.
Following the win, Vermut said he leaned on patience during a pressure-filled closing stretch and that the result will stay with him.
