Interview Highlights with CGN
Path into golf and high school success
Weed started golf at age eight while rotating through several sports that included tennis, basketball, and softball. Golf quickly became the priority and by high school she had shifted fully to the game. Competing for Ocean Springs from seventh grade through senior year, she collected three Mississippi individual state titles, helped the program win three team state titles, and gained experience in team environments that later translated to college golf.
Junior tournament development
Her junior schedule centered on state championships, American Junior Golf Association events, and Mississippi state amateur championships. She won an AJGA event, the Mississippi Junior Amateur, and the Mississippi Women’s Amateur while still in high school. Those performances laid the foundation for recruiting and confirmed that she could compete beyond the state level.
Choosing Mississippi State
Weed grew up with a clear goal of playing for Mississippi State and explored other options only briefly. Once the Bulldogs staff offered, she committed to Starkville. The decision allowed her to stay close to home while joining a program that fit both her competitive ambitions and academic plans in management.
Transition to college golf
The freshman transition brought new responsibilities as a student athlete, but the workload felt manageable after years of balancing multiple sports and schoolwork. She approached college the same way she had approached high school, leaning on preparation and a strong work ethic. By winning qualifying rounds early and securing a lineup spot, she built confidence that carried through an undefeated run in SEC Championship match play and consistent results all season.
Coaching and technical work
Weed works with swing coach Tony Ruggiero and focuses on gradual changes that allow her to keep competing at a high level while adjusting technique. Together they emphasize a more neutral takeaway and better use of the ground through impact. That work has led to more consistent ball striking and supported her scoring jumps from freshman to sophomore year. She pairs swing work with continued improvement in putting and short game.
Building on sophomore year
After a breakout sophomore season with a win at the Mason Rudolph Championship and an NCAA scoring record tying round at The Ally, Weed used the following summer to refine strengths rather than overhaul her game. She added more tournament starts but maintained an emphasis on small gains in areas that could sustain low scoring across an entire year.
Competitive mindset and handling adversity
Weed describes her approach as gritty, focused on fighting for every shot regardless of lie or situation. When she finds a fairway bunker, a poor lie, or a bad break, she treats the situation as a challenge to save par or limit damage and trusts that her scoring ability will create birdie chances later in the round. That mindset helped her turn off days into under par rounds during a consistent junior fall.
Team dynamic at Mississippi State
Mississippi State’s roster changed significantly between her sophomore and junior seasons, with several graduates and a large freshman class. Weed and the returning players worked to mentor the new group while maintaining a competitive environment through qualifiers and practice games. She notes that the team connected quickly and built a strong mix of upper class leadership and freshman energy.
Goals and outlook
Weed’s personal goals center on sustained top five finishes in college events and continued consistency rather than chasing single weeks. She aims to return to the Augusta National Women’s Amateur and make the cut, while leading Mississippi State toward a national championship run and a place in match play. Her performance to date has placed her among the top ranked collegiate players in the game.
